Absence – discovering & designing in uncharted territory 2016

The conceptual research and design project ‘absence’ was a constant process of inquiry into the topic of ‘absence from home’. While residential space is getting more and more contested and expensive, many people actually spend several hours a day and several days per month away from their dwelling spaces. Based on empirical investigations as well as on theoretical and design research, particular ideas and directions were conceptualized to grasp ‘absence’ and to work with it later on. Subsequently, the project focused on the potential shareability of certain dwelling spaces and on individual rhythms of ‘absence from home’. All this led to conceptual floor plan designs, which would enable the users to utilize their ‘absence’ to their own benefit.
